Rosie lay in bed with her phone glowing in the dark. She was watching Brenda's ClickChat again. Brenda's life looked perfect in every video . A big, bright kitchen. A beach with clear blue water. Nice clothes and a smile that never dropped. Rosie sighed and looked around her own room. Everything felt small and plain next to Brenda's life.
Rosie's home was never quiet. Her little cousins ran up and down the hall. Her grandmother sang in the kitchen. The TV was always on. Someone was always yelling about something. Rosie loved them. But she wished, just once, that her life looked as perfect as Brenda's did on that screen.
Her best friend Leo did not care about any of that. Leo drew comics. At lunch, on the bus, in the backseat of the car, he was always bent over his notebook, drawing. When Rosie showed him Brenda's videos, he just shrugged. "It looks fake," he said, and went back to his page. Leo never wished he was someone else. He was happy being Leo.
Then one day the teacher paired students for a science project. Rosie got Brenda. Rosie could not believe her luck. She was going to see that perfect life up close. Maybe she would even end up in one of the videos.
That weekend Rosie went to Brenda's house. It was big but it was quiet. Too quiet. No cousins. No grandmother. No TV. Just the clock ticking on the wall.
"Is anyone else home?" Rosie asked.
"No," Brenda said. "My mom travels a lot for work. It is mostly just me."
Then Rosie saw the famous kitchen. In the videos it looked huge and bright. In real life, it was just a normal kitchen. Kind of small. Kind of plain. Rosie did not understand. It looked so different on the screen.
Brenda made a snack and set it on a nice plate. But she did not eat it. First she had to film it. She moved the plate by the window. She fixed the light. She took the video again and again. It took almost an hour. When she finally posted it, she stared at her phone and waited. Only two people liked it. Brenda went quiet. She put her food down and did not finish it.
"What about all those beach trips?" Rosie asked. "They look amazing."
Brenda gave a small smile. "Those were my mom's work trips. I just came along. I sat in the hotel while she worked. I took one good picture and posted it. That was the best part of the whole trip."
Rosie looked around the big, quiet house. Then she thought about her own home, full of noise and people. For the first time, she started to understand something.
"Can I tell you something?" Brenda said. She was not smiling now. "Your videos with Leo and your cousins... your house always looks so full. So loud and happy. I wish I had that. I would trade anything for a house like yours."
Rosie did not know what to say. The girl with the perfect life wished she had Rosie's life.
They worked on the project all afternoon and it was actually fun. Away from the camera, Brenda was funny and kind. Rosie saw that there was a real person behind those perfect videos, and that person was kind of lonely.
When Rosie got home, the noise hit her like a wave. Her cousins were fighting over a toy. Her grandmother was singing off-key. The TV was too loud. But this time, Rosie smiled. Her house was not perfect but it was full, and full was better than perfect.
She took out her phone. She did not open ClickChat. Instead, she texted Brenda. "Come over Saturday. It is loud and messy and there is nowhere to film. You will love it."
Brenda wrote back fast. "Yes. Please."
On Saturday, Brenda sat at Rosie's crowded table. The cousins climbed on her. The TV blared. No one took a single video. Brenda laughed harder than Rosie had ever seen her laugh on any screen. And Rosie, sitting in the middle of all that noise, felt perfectly content.
